FIXING OPTIMUM THE OF MATURITY FOR TROPICAL SUGARBEET HYBRIDS

ABSTRACT

A field experiment was condcted in tropical sugarbeet at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbator in order to find out the suitable hybrid and Optimum harvest time for high root yield and sugar recovery. The experiment was laid out in split plot degin with three replications. The main plot treatments consists of three sugarbeet hybrids, viz. Shubhra, Indus and Cauvery and that of sub plot consist of four times of harvests at 10 days interval starting form 150,160,170 and 180 days after sowing (DAS) were taken. The sugarbeet root yield has significantly influenced by the different sugarbeet hybrids and time of harvest. Among the sugarbeet hybrids, the highest sugarbeet root yield of 64.4 ha-1 was recorded in Indus, which was on par with Cauvery(63.7t ha-1). Delayed date of harvest (170DAS) registered the highest root yield of 61.1t ha-1 but the highest pol and baggable sugar percentage and sugar yield were recorded when harvested at 150 DAS.
