ABSTRACT

The present paper reports the isolation and characterization of an alkaline protease producing bacterial species from soil samples. The bacterial isolate has been identified as Exiguobacterium acetylicum MTCC 9115. Maximal protease production was detected during the early stationary phase. Maximal activity of the enzyme was recorded at a pH of 9.0 and temperature of 40ºC. Apart from having a broad range of pH (4 - 12) and temperature (20ºC - 60ºC) tolerance, the enzyme was also halotolerant (0 - 15%NaCl). These properties of the enzyme indicate its potential application in detergent, leather and food industries.
