ABSTRACT

The study deals with the density and diversity of protozoa in response to the sewage - fed irrigation in a rice agro - ecosystem from Orissa. Sewage irrigation was observed to promote protozoa density, species richness and species diversity, production and turn over in comparison to the rain - fed irrigation. Study of protozoa assemblage revealed lognormal distribution in the sewage - fed crop field and geometric series distributional pattern in the normal rain - fed crop field. The study highlights the importance of sewage - fed irrigation as an alternative method of sewage utilization for supporting greater productivity in tropical agro - ecosystem.
