ACTIVATING SYSTEM FROM HEMOCYTE LYSATE SUPERNATANT OF 
FRESHWATER CRAB, BARYTELPHUSA CUNICULARIS (WEST – WOOD)

ABSTRACT

In the present study the ProPO system in hemocytes of freshwater crab, Barytelphusa cunicularis was studied to purify the proteinase inhibitor from the hemocyte lysate supernatant. It was found that a 52kDa proteinase inhibitor purified from hemocyte lysate supernatant on Sephadex G –75 gel chromatography inhibited the conversion of prophenol oxidase to phenoloxidase. These purified proteins showed a 97% inhibition of trypsin and 50% and 72% inhibition of prophenoloxidase and phenoloxidase respectively. Thus, the present study suggests that this purified protein may be a regulator for conversion of prophenoloxidase to phenoloxidase in this freshwater crab, Barytelphusa cunicularis.
