ANTI-HYPERGLYCEMIC ACTIVITY OF MUSHROOM ON SERUM GLUCOSE 
LEVELS IN ALLOXAN INDUCED DIABETIC RATS

ABSTRACT

The potentials of an edible mushroom Pleurotus eous in decreasing the hyperglycemic levels in alloxan induced diabetic male albino rats were investigated. Diabetes was induced with alloxan in the dose of 70 mg/kg, intraperitoneally in the morning hours after acclimatization prior to experiment. In the acute study, the blood glucose level was estimated at 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 12 and 24 h after drug administration. A significant decrease of blood glucose level at 2, 4, and 6 h was noted. A significant reduction in body weight 48 to 72 hours after alloxan induction and presence of glycosuria was noted. Mushrooms have a great therapeutic potential and the screening of useful bioactive metabolites from mushrooms as a prolific resource for drugs needs to be investigated further.
