ACEPHATE INDUCED ULTRASTRUCTURAL CHANGES IN DIFFERENT BRAIN

ABSTRACT

The aim of the study was to assess the neurotoxicity of an organophosphate compound Acephate in inducing cytoarchitectural changes in Albino rats. Acephate (O, S,- dimethyl acetyl phosphoramidothioate) is a racemic Organophosphorus insecticide and is effective against a wide range of insects and their larvae. The study was conducted on 40 male albino rats of wistar strain. The LD50 of Acephate (1080mg/kg BW) was evaluated by probit analysis method of Finney. 1/5 LD50 (216mg/kg bw) was selected as sublethal dose for oral administration to albino rats. Albino rats were divided in to two groups with each group containing 20 rats. Group I served as control and received distilled water on alternate days up to 28th day. Group II was exposed to oral sublethal doses of Acephate up to 28th day with an interval of 48 hrs. The animals of group I and II were sacrificed on 30th day by cervical dislocation. The different brain regions were excised for ultra structural studies. Cytoarchitectural changes were remarkably distinct in different brain regions of Acephate treated albino rats.
